No doubt there are many trucking industry issues out there, but in this article we will concentrate on the one that stand out of the crowd.

Actually the top 10 trucking industry issues that I will present today are some of the main trucking industry issues not only in America, but worldwide as well!

This topic of mine is probably not something new to you! The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), releases their Annual Critical Issues in The Trucking Industry Report – a survey on a yearly bases where they identify the main trucking industry issues and different strategies on how to deal with.

But well, as long as there is a way to fix a problem, bring it on!

Truth to be told, every year there are additional trucking industry issues that we need to worry about, but some things stayed same.

In the bucket with the one that stayed same there for a while, I will mention the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Mandate (released in December 2015), and the legislative and regulatory challenges including the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.

DOT inspection can mean a great deal of stress, regardless how calm and experienced truck driver you are.

You shouldn’t fear the DOT inspection, if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing!

I know its easiest said than done, but if you obey the rules and regulations, than there is nothing to worry about; or better said less things to worry about!

First of all, being in the trucking industry means a lot of rules! Period!

Regardless if you are a broker, dispatcher, experienced truck driver or a rookie, trucking company owner, or hold some role in the management or logistics, you still will need to comply and obey with the numerous agencies rules and regulations, with some of the main ones being the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

It’s a major change in transport regulation and you need to get yourself ready for it. Lose all confusion and break the myths about ELD mandate.

Therefore, I’m going to answer to what ELD is, how will effect your business and clear all the buzz around it.

Let’s start.

What is an Electronic Logging Device – ELD?

It’s an electronic solution for professional truck drivers and commercial motor carriers to track Hours of Service – HOS compliance.

Electronic Logging Device

The new ELD have to:

  • connect to the truck’s engine in order to record if the truck is in motion
  • allow the driver to log in and select On-duty, Off-duty, or On-Duty Not Driving, and depending on vehicle movement drive segments must be selected automatically
  • graphically display a Record of Duty Status – RODS, to make a quick look of hours easier for a driver
  • provide data in a format that can be transmitted to law enforcement in a different ways, such as wireless web services or USB
  • be provider-certified that the device meets the proper specifications
  • be listed on an FMCSA website

Does ELD apply to me and when should I have it?

All CDL drivers, required to keep a RODS (also called HOS reports), will have to use it by 2017. There are around 3 million vehicles in this category, and 3.4 million drivers.
